ISU basketball player arrested for sexual abuse

An Iowa State basketball player was arrested Friday on a charge of third degree sexual abuse.

Kenny Pratt, 21, allegedly sexually abused a 19-year-old female student in Willow Hall the evening of Oct. 8. The student, whose name has not been released by the Iowa State Department of Public Safety, reportedly knew Pratt.

Loras Jaeger, DPS director, said there were witnesses to the alleged crime.

Tim Floyd, ISU men’s basketball coach, announced in a prepared statement Friday that he has dismissed Pratt from the basketball team.

“From the first day of school, we have stressed that every person in our program is accountable for their actions. I’m sensitive to the very serious nature of the charge made in this case.

“Personally, I’m deeply saddened and concerned by what has occurred — for all parties involved. There is not a person in our basketball program that doesn’t feel a strong sense of personal pain in the wake of this incident,” Floyd said.

Pratt was released from Story County Jail pending trial. He was being held in lieu of $12,000 bond and could face up to 10 years in prison and a fine if convicted. Third degree sexual abuse is a Class C felony.

Pratt, who lives in Larch Hall, is a junior college transfer player from the College of Eastern Utah, where he averaged 21.5 points a game last season and was an honorable mention all-American. He is from Chicago.

The junior guard/forward visited Floyd while he was head coach at New Orleans, but decided not to attend UNO. Floyd said at the basketball media day Oct. 10 that he was impressed with Pratt in high school and coming out of the junior college ranks.

“He’s a 6-3 player who plays much larger,” Floyd said. “We think he’s a guy who can guard an off guard, guard a small forward, guard a power forward even though he’s 6-3.”

Pratt is the second transfer player Floyd has dismissed this semester. Last month, Belefia Parks was found guilty of second degree theft by a Story County jury.

He was convicted of taking more than $1,000 worth of electronic equipment from the Ames Kmart. Parks, a transfer point guard from DePaul University, sat out last season because of NCAA transfer rules.

Floyd now has 11 players on scholarship. The NCAA allows 13.
