Boys and Girls Club holding Egglympics

There are already the Junior Olypmics, the Special Olympics and the traditional Olympics.

Now, a fourth event has been added to the list: the Egglympics.

This Saturday at the Cyclone Truck Plaza on Highway 30, the Egglympics will be held for the first time, sponsored by the Iowa Egg Council and the Boys and Girls Club of Ames.

“It is team sports with fun and ‘eggscitement’,” said Janet Anderson, executive director of the Iowa Egg Council. “We are hoping to have help from the Ames Boys and Girls Club. The volunteers are usually involved in ISU athletics.”

The idea began when the Cyclone Truck Plaza was looking for ways to become more involved in the community. Eventually owner Bob James reached the Iowa Egg Council. Anderson came up with the idea for an Egglympics, and James contacted the Boys and Girls Club of Ames.

“The Boys and Girls Club is what it is all about,” James said.

Egg events include A Walk on the Wild Egg, String’em Up, Batter Up, an egg tossing contest and a cake-eating contest.

“There’s also an event called Ride’em Cowperson. You ride a stick horse and carry an egg on a spoon to your teammates,” said Jennifer Crecelius, an ISU intern working for the Iowa Egg Council.

In the egg toss competition, there will be senior citizen teams. Each team has six members. Prizes for the events will be donated by local merchants to make the Egglympics a success.

“There will also be a dunk tank,” James said. “Unfortunately, I will be a victim. There will be several folks everybody will like to take a shot at, but the city manager and chief of police were mysteriously busy this week.”

Those who do not wish to play with the eggs should show up hungry. A free omelet breakfast will be served from 9 a.m. until noon.

During the games, donations will be accepted by the Boys and Girls Club of Ames.

“It’s for a good cause,” Crecelius said, “It’s going to be a lot of fun, and hopefully it will be a nice day out.”

Anderson mentioned there would be athletes from ISU’s football and track teams.

To enter a team in the Egglympics call Phil Doss, marketing representative for the Cyclone Truck Plaza, at 232-3072 and show up Saturday at 9 a.m. hungry for “eggcellence”.
