In a game full of miscues, slips and stumbles, Iowa State scratched and clawed past Drake on Saturday for a 27-24 win. The Cyclones finished the regular season with a record of 8-4 (6-3 Big 12).

It was ugly from the start. Players slipped nearly every play on the soggy and muddy field. Hanging onto the ball also proved to be a tall task, as Drake muffed two first-half kickoffs and punted a ball into one of its own blockers, and Cyclone punter Corey Dunn mishandled a snap that resulted in a big loss on fourth down.

Drake took a 7-0 lead after Dunn was taken down at the Iowa State 7-yard line.

The Cyclones mustered three touchdowns later in the half and took a 20-14 lead into the locker rooms at halftime. Junior running back David Montgomery had 17 carries in the first half for 96 yards and two touchdowns.

Junior wide receiver Hakeem Butler etched his name into the record books with two first-half catches. He passed Lane Danielsen’s single-season receiving yards record (set in 2002).

Drake took a 24-20 lead in the third quarter, but the Cyclones had their best drive of the game to take a 27-24 lead right before the fourth quarter.

Iowa State held on in the final quarter for the win.
