Iowa State thrashes Niagara 95-35 in first WNIT Preseason Tournament game

In Iowa State’s first Preseason WNIT game the Cyclones beat Niagara 95-35.

In the first quarter, Iowa State scored 27 points while limiting Niagara to four points.

After struggling to make an impact in two exhibition games, freshman Ashley Joens led all scorers in the first with nine points on 3-5 shooting from three.

The following quarter, Joens pushed her game total to 16 on 6-10 shooting from the floor as Iowa State pushed its total to 49 points. 

Niagara had 12 points at the end of the first half.

With Joens leading Iowa State in scoring, Bridget Carleton led Iowa State in rebounds and assists. She had nine rebounds including four offensive rebounds and seven assists.

Defensively, Iowa State was able to hold Niagara to 17.9% shooting from the floor. Iowa State had four blocks and six steals.

The Cyclones pushed their lead to 70-24 after three quarters.

After only having four points in the first half, Carleton added ten more points and six more rebounds to push her game stat line to 14 points, 15 rebounds and seven assists.

Joens didn’t score after the first half.

In the fourth quarter, the Cyclones didn’t play their starters but added 25 more points to their team total.

Iowa State’s next game will be against Northern Illinois on Sunday at 2 p.m. The Huskies beat Yale 89-80 in their first game of the tournament.
