Editor’s note: Each week, the Iowa State Daily will look back on a notable matchup from the past between the Cyclones and whoever they are playing that particular week.

This week we look at the first Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series football game that went into overtime.

10 years and one day ago, in front of 56,085 fans, the second-largest crowd in Jack Trice Stadium at the time, Iowa State defeated Iowa 44-41 in triple overtime.

After trading touchdowns in the first two overtimes, Iowa kicked a field goal to start the third overtime. Iowa State then had the ball at the four yard line and running back James White ran it in for a touchdown, his second of the game, giving Iowa State the win.

This win, which was followed by fans storming the field, is the last win Iowa State has had against Iowa in Jack Trice Stadium. Coming into that game, Iowa State had been on a three-game losing skid against Iowa.

The Cyclones struggled out of the gates in this one, trailing 10-0 midway through the second quarter, but they got things going with in final seven and half minutes of the second quarter, tying the game with an 11 yard touchdown pass from Steele Jantz to wide receiver Darius Reynolds and a made field goal by Grant Mahoney from 54 yards out.

Mike Meyer drilled two field goals for the Hawkeyes in the second half, but the Cyclones took the heading into the fourth quarter with a four yard passing touchdown from Jantz to wide receiver Josh Lenz.

Iowa retook the lead late in the fourth quarter with a one yard touchdown run from Marcus Coker and two-point conversion pass from James Vandenberg to Keenan Davis with a little over five minutes left in the game.

With 1:17 left in the game, Jantz connected with wide receiver Darius Darks for a four yard touchdown pass to tie things up at 24 and send the game into overtime, where Iowa State would eventually win 44-41.

In this 2011 game, Iowa State found success through the air with Jantz connecting on 25 of his 37 passes and scoring four touchdowns, two of which were caught by Reynolds.

Iowa State won that game despite fumbling three times and missing two field goals.

Each team was led by it’s running backs, with Coker running the ball 35 times for 143 yards and two touchdowns for Iowa, while Shontrelle Johnson had 18 rushes and 109 yards for Iowa State, and White rushed for two touchdowns as well.

The Cyclones out-gained the Hawkeyes 473 to 365.
