The Iowa State soccer squad lost a heartbreaking match on Thursday night to No. 15 Memphis 1-0 in overtime. Freshman Aubrey Mister’s shot in the 99th minute flew into the top right corner to give the Tigers a golden-goal win under the lights at the Cyclone Soccer Complex.

The match was a tense affair much throughout the first 90 minutes, with neither team able to capitalize on their offensive play. Memphis applied the pressure early and often, swarming any Iowa State player who had the ball at their feet. Despite the constant offensive presence by the Tigers, the Cyclones defense held well through the first half, allowing four shots.

Cyclones goalkeeper Jordan Silkowitz led her team in the back third, finishing the match with seven saves, including five in the second half. The Cyclones as a team also had six fouls in the first half, finishing with 16 in total as both teams tried to grab an opportunity to move the ball down the field.

Memphis continued their attacking barrage in the second half, and would finish the match with 20 shots, eight of which were on goal. Both teams had a couple of great chances to score before overtime, but just couldn’t close it out. Notably, Iowa State junior Mira Emma in the second half had the ball at the top of the box, but couldn’t get a shot off as the Tigers defense held.

Iowa State dropped to 2-4 after the loss, while Memphis continues their undefeated streak to the season with a record of 6-0-1. The Cyclones will close out their four-game home campaign on Sep. 16 against Drake. The match is set to kick off at 6 pm.
