Swim and dive open season with dominant win in Omaha

Iowa State swim and dive went into Omaha, Nebraska, and picked up the first win in its 2021 season over the Omaha Mavericks by a final score of 187-79 on Saturday.

The newcomers on team set the tone at the meet with six victories in six events, as the Cyclones went on to win all the swimming and diving events that they could win.

The Cyclones got an outstanding performance as a team. As the day progressed, the swim team got off to an excellent start. An excellent start for the 200 medley relay team Emily Haan, Martha Haas, Wyli Erlechman, and Andie Quirke with a time of 1:47. Then in the 200 free, Brinley Horras took first place with a time of 1:54, Freshman Ashley Bengtson finished with a time of 1:55 to take second place. 100 fly as Lucia Rizzo touches in under a minute with 58.54. Trinity Gilbert claims the second-place time of 1:00, Brinley Horras swim in the 500 free has herself a start to her Cyclone career, getting her second win on the day with 5:04.

On the diving events, Michelle Schlossmacher Smith guaranteed first on the three-meter with her score of 277.13. Joscelyn Buss came in third with 222.75. On the one-meter, Schlossmacher Smith again came in first with 286.35. The score brings her Zone-qualifying score season absolute to four.

Iowa State’s next swim meet is back at home in ames on Jan 30 against UNI Panthers looking to improve to 2-0.
