After dropping their last three games in Big 12 play, the Iowa State Cyclones suffered a narrow loss to the Texas Longhorns.

Friday afternoon’s matchup in Ames between the 13th ranked Texas Longhorns, and the Iowa State Cyclones was a close and a highly competitive matchup which resulted in a 2-1 victory for Texas.

“It’s frustrating, we got the 13th-ranked team on the brink,” said Iowa State coach Tony Minatta. “We played disciplined, organized, we frustrated them, and we had some good chances.”

Iowa State has now lost five games by a goal in the last 10 minutes of the contest, with the first three coming against Missouri, Purdue, Milwaukee and Kansas.

The Longhorns put pressure on the Cyclones early in the first half as they drew four fouls against the Cyclones in the first eight minutes.

That pressure would pay off for the Longhorns as Cyera Hintzen scored a goal the Longhorns in the 15th minute, which was her 10th goal of the season. She leads the Big 12 in scoring.

Two minutes later, the Cyclones tied the game with a goal by sophomore Kassi Ginther, her second of the season. Senior Klasey Medelberg had the assist.

“Once Klasey crossed the ball in, I knew I had to make something happen,” Ginther said.

The weather was expected to be a factor in Friday’s matchup as kickoff was moved to 2 p.m. due to the likelihood of inclement weather. Despite the time change, the weather still caused a problem.

After a 45-minute lightning delay, the game resumed with four minutes left in the first half. Iowa State and Texas went into halftime tied at 1.

“I thought we had some good energy in the first half, the delay took a bite out of the game for us,” Minatta said.

Throughout the second half, both teams had opportunities to take the lead, but not their team was able to do so.

In the 87th minute, Hintzen scored again for the Longhorns and Texas finished off the 2-1 over the Cyclones.

“It’s the little things in the last few minutes of the game that are really killing us right now,” Minatta said.

This loss is now the seventh time that the Cyclones have lost by one goal this season.

“We need to stay out of our heads and focus on what we are doing, staying disciplined defensively and working on our counter-attacks,” said redshirt senior Brooke Tasker.

The Cyclones now drop to 2-10-2 on the season and 0-3-1 in Big 12 play.

Iowa State will be back in action at Cyclone Sports Complex on Sunday against the 24th-ranked Baylor Bears at 1 p.m.

“We got to move forward, and everyone has to take ownership of what they did on the field and what more they can do,” Minatta said.
