Jaren Holmes shoots a 3 from the top of the key against Oklahoma State on Feb. 11, 2023.

After a difficult loss that ended their undefeated games at home, the Iowa State men’s basketball team will have a chance to bounce back.

The Cyclones dropped eight spots from No. 11 to No. 19 in the AP Poll after their recent loss to Oklahoma State.

“Time and time again we’ve talked about our habits and the things that we do daily, the work that we put in, and I feel like we need to stick to what we’re doing and stay together and we’ll be right back to where we were,” Tre King said.

TCU, who Iowa State will play Wednesday night, is in a similar position. The Horned Frogs dropped five spots, from No. 17 to No. 22, after they also lost on their home court against Baylor who is now ranked No. 9.

Head coach T.J. Otzelberger was able to watch the film from their loss to the Cowboys and reflect on what needs to be done better in order to win games.

“For us, when we weren’t seeing the ball go through the hole at certain points, whether it was the foul line, layups, jump shots, whatever you want to call it, that had a little bit of a mental effect on us,” Otzelberger said.

Additionally, while it was a fast paced game with great defense, Otzelberger said the team needs to stay together and continue to do their job; whether that be limiting fouls or making shots at the free throw line.

With fouls being a recent weakness for Iowa State, Otzelberger said he feels that the amount of fouls from their game against West Virginia lingered mentally onto the players against Oklahoma State. Additionally, Otzelberger said social media can play a role in that as well.

“They see [foul count, turnovers] on social media or somebody comments…and you start to pay attention to the wrong stuff,” Otzelberger said.

With that, Otzelberger said the team’s main focus right now is working through the mental aspect of the game and making sure they are mentally tough in difficult moments.

Looking further into the game against TCU, the Horned Frogs currently sit at seventh in the Big 12 standings, two spots below Iowa State. The Cyclones last matchup with TCU resulted in one of two Iowa State road wins after a Gabe Kalscheur three-pointer.

TCU and Iowa State are quite similar in the road win records, both with just two road wins. However, one of the Horned Frogs’ biggest road wins was against No. 5 Kansas Jan. 21.

Additionally, TCU has been dealing with two injured players, Mike Miles Jr., their leading scorer, and Eddie Lampkin Jr., which seem to have been a result of their current three-game losing streak.

Miles hyperextended his knee in TCU’s game against Mississippi State on Jan. 28, and Lampkin has been out with an ankle injury.

“Even as they’ve had guys out, they fly the ball up in transition,” Otzelberger said. “They are awesome on the offensive glass…they’re just a physically tough team.”

However, according to the Fort-Worth Star Telegram, both players were active in Tuesday’s practice so there is a possibility for their return against Iowa State, and the Cyclones are prepared for their potential return.

The Cyclones have recently had their return of Aljaz Kunc after a finger injury. While Kunc is still getting back into things, he is just happy to be back on the court.

“Everything’s in play. Everything’s going to happen. You got to take it all one day at a time. Just keep focusing on doing what you can control,” Otzelberger said.

Iowa State will tip-off against TCU at 8 p.m. Wednesday at Hilton Coliseum. The game can be watched on ESPNU.
