The Iowa State Cyclones’ lone game of the weekend resulted in a 2-0 loss against the No. 18 West Virginia Mountaineers.

Iowa State came into Friday’s matchup with a 2-11-2 (0-4-1 Big 12) record and stood in ninth place out of ten teams in the Big 12, while the Mountaineers were 8-3-3 (4-1 Big 12) on the season and were tied for first with Baylor in the Big 12.

For Friday’s matchup, the Cyclones wore pink jerseys for breast cancer awareness.

One Cyclone player that returned to the Cyclone lineup was junior midfielder Hannah Cade. Cade started the first nine games of the season, but she suffered a foot injury in a game against the University of Missouri-Kansas City Kangaroos on Sept. 14 that kept her from playing in the last six games. In Friday night’s game, she came into the game in 35th minute.

In the first 15 minutes of play, neither team created many scoring opportunities, but the Mountaineers were in control of the pace of play.

The Mountaineers dominated possession of the ball in the early stages of the game. The Cyclones weren’t able to get off any shots in the first half.

Freshman forward Lizzie Mayfield came off the bench and scored a goal for the Mountaineers, and the Mountaineers went into halftime with a 1-0 lead over the Cyclones.

The Cyclones had their first scoring opportunity of the game early with a corner kick taken by senior midfielder Emily Steil, but the header by senior midfielder Kasey Opfer went over the goal.

Throughout the second half, the Mountaineers maintained control of the game and continued to limit the Cyclones’ scoring chances.

Sh’Nia Gordon sealed the Mountaineers’ victory by scoring a goal in the 79th minute to make the score 2-0.

Iowa State will be back in action next week, as they travel to Norman, Oklahoma, to face the Oklahoma Sooners on Friday.
