Punt, pass and pick: Oklahoma State edition

Wide receiver, Hakeem Butler, runs towards the end zone during the second quarter of the football game against Oklahoma State. Butler scored the first touchdown for the Cyclone team during the game at Jack Trice Stadium on Sept. 15.

Iowa State is due for a win.

That’s kind of dumb logic — I mean, Kansas is due for about 37 wins. But I think Iowa State’s been just on the edge of winning several games lately, and Saturday in Stillwater is going to be the day the offense finally breaks through.

Oklahoma State’s defense has forced a lot of sacks, but if Deshaunte Jones and Tarique Milton pick up some yards across the middle or on the edge, it could open up lanes for David Montgomery (or Sheldon Croney) on the ground or for Hakeem Butler over the top.

Oklahoma State’s offense has been elite, but Iowa State already held its own against a transcendent Oklahoma offense. The Cowboys don’t have Kyler Murray slinging it around.

I think it’s a close game, but Iowa State has the defense to slow down Oklahoma State and pull out the win.

Offensive offense has been the name of the game for Iowa State this year.

Sure, that may be harsh, but the Cyclones are dead last in the Big 12 in nearly every single statistical category. Twice (twice!) this season, the Cyclones have failed to pick up 200 yards of offense over 60 minutes.

The run game has come around in recent weeks, with David Montgomery breaking the 100-yard barrier in two straight games, but the passing game hit an unexpected snag against the Horned Frogs. Noland had less than 100 yards passing on 20-plus attempts and lost a fumble — which was returned for a touchdown.

Noland isn’t a bad quarterback by any means, but with a shaky pass-blocking line and an Oklahoma State defense leading the Big 12 in sacks? It could be a tough night for the Cyclones on the offensive end.

The Cyclones will have their hands full on defense, as the Cowboys make a living off of explosive plays. With running back Justice Hill in the fold, the strong Iowa State defense will struggle to keep the Cowboys at bay.

Chalk it up to running with a trend, but I think the Cyclones find themselves in a deeper hole than many thought possible after Saturday.

The skid continues.

Oklahoma State’s offense features a top-tier running back in Justice Hill and a spotty passing game. Hill averages 7.5 yards per carry through five games. Meanwhile in four games, the Cyclone defense limited opponents to 3.3 yards per carry. The battle between Hill and the Iowa State defense will likely decide the outcome of the game.

On the other side of the ball, the Cyclones need to limit the pressure for redshirt sophomore quarterback Zeb Noland. A hole in the Iowa State offense has been the line. The line has been shuffled around, and the pass and rush blocking have struggled throughout the season.

Oklahoma State brings a strong pass rush to the game. The Cowboys piled up 24 sacks in their first five games, including seven sacks from Jordan Brailford. Oklahoma State leads Division I football with the next closest being Ohio State with 19.

The Cowboys average a sack every 9.17 plays, according to College Football Analytics.

I think Iowa State’s weakness and Oklahoma State’s strength brews for a Cowboy win in Stillwater.
