The Memorial Union’s Workspace orchestrated a Valentine’s Day pop-up shop for students to find that perfect gift for their significant others. The pop-up is located adjacent to the Iowa State University Bookstore and is open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, Friday, Sunday and Monday.
Located in the east basement of the Memorial Union, the Workspace is a creative space for Iowa State students and members of the community to participate in a variety of activities and crafts. The space offers instructional classes and workshops for students to tap into their creative side and learn new skills.
The Workspace’s Valentine’s Day pop-up features an array of gifts ranging from 50 cents to $30. Items available for purchase include handmade pottery, succulents and marbled cards created by local artist Rhonda Scott.
“I think it’s good for people to be able to come and hear about the Workspace and see some of the things that we do down there while also shopping locally with us,” said Natalie McDaniels, a senior in graphic design and Workspace staff member.
Many of the items for sale are handmade by Iowa State students, and all proceeds help promote and fund the Workspace and its activities.
“We’re in a location that isn’t super visible, so it’s nice to get out from under there and give our student-staff some time to be creative. We want to give them an opportunity while also promoting some of the local artists in our community,” said Erin McCollum, Memorial Union student services specialist.
While Valentine’s Day can be an expensive occasion for some college students, the Workspace’s pop-up shop offers students affordable, handmade gifts that also help contribute towards supporting fellow students and local artists.
“I think it’s a really nice opportunity for students who might be on a budget to purchase cheaper, more affordable gifts,” McDaniels said.
The Workspace pop-up will remain open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, as well as Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of the following week.
