The Cyclones traveled to Iowa City on Friday to compete in the Iowa Open. The meet was full of teams from across the state. The Cyclones had a solid showing on both sides from both the men’s and the women’s teams.
Here are the three big takeaways from the Iowa Open.
Women’s 60-meter hurdles shows out
This season for women’s 60-meter hurdles has been pretty rocky, but Friday they changed that narrative by placing two runners in the top four. Junior Kiersten Fisher placed second and set a new PR with a time of 8.57 seconds. Following her in fourth place was sophomore Kailynn Gubbels with a time of 8.94 seconds.
Men’s 200-meter has best showing of the day
Just like the women’s 60-meter, the men’s 200-meter has not been a strong point for most of this season. Friday was a different story. The men placed five runners in the top seven.
Sophomore Mikey McClain set a PR for himself with a time of 21.33 seconds and placed first. Senior Joven Nelson came in fourth with a time of 21.89 seconds, freshman Grayson Hartman placed fifth (22.50 seconds), followed by freshman Jensen Meeker (22.66), and freshman Calvin Curcija (22.78).
Women’s weight throw dominates yet again
One of the constants this season has been the women’s weight throw. The Cyclones keep winning and placing high in every meet, and Friday was no different.
Senior Kaitlyn Burson won the event with a throw of 20.02 meters. She was followed by freshman Ella O’Neall who placed fifth (17.64 meters), and junior Betty Rosvold who placed sixth (16.64 meters).
The Cyclones will be back in action Feb. 23 and 24 at the Big 12 Indoor Championship being held in Lubbock, Texas, on the campus of Texas Tech.
