The Iowa soccer team came into Friday night’s rivalry game with Iowa State undefeated and with a three-game winning streak over the Cyclones. The Cyclones came out on top against the Hawkeyes by a 2-1 score, thus putting an end to both of those streaks.

Right from the get-go, both teams were very aggressive and played a physical game.

The Cyclones put the first goal in the back of the net in the seventh minute when redshirt junior Kasey Opfer scored a header off a corner kick from senior Emily Steil.

After an early flurry of opportunities for the Cyclones, the Hawkeyes’ defense held up and created multiple scoring opportunities. Between the 30th and 33rd minute, the Hawkeyes had three corner kicks.

Late in the first half, the Cyclones scored their second goal off another header by freshman Taylor Bee. Junior midfielder Hannah Cade had the assist.

The Cyclones went into the locker room holding a 2-0 lead at halftime.

Less than a minute into the second half, Kaleigh Haus scored a goal for the Hawkeyes to bring the game to a score of 2-1.

Midway through the second half, the Cyclones put pressure on the Hawkeyes’ defense, but the Hawkeyes prevented the Cyclones from scoring.

The Hawkeyes had some chances to score the game-tying goal late in the second half, but the Cyclones held firm and came out on top with a 2-1 victory. The Cyclones are now 2-4-1 on the season.

Iowa State now leads 2-0 in the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series.

The Iowa State women’s soccer team will be back in action Sunday as the undefeated Milwaukee Panthers travel to Ames to face the Cyclones at the Cyclone Sports Complex at 1 p.m.
