Just like Iowa’s fall weather, my music taste is pretty much all over the place. Ranging from rock ballads to somber songs to pop and even The Peanuts, this playlist represents all the different feelings that the fall can bring.
Here are a few songs that are highlights of my fall playlist.
“Wake Me Up When September Ends” by Green Day
Green Day’s rock ballad is one of the band’s most iconic songs for a reason. A song about the unbearable feeling of loss and what that feeling can do to a person. Everything from Billie Joe Armstrong’s vocals to the guitar helps add to the gut-wrenching feeling that makes it a perfect song for a moody fall day.
“Empty Sky” by Bruce Springsteen
The entirety of the album “The Rising” is about the attacks of 9/11. Empty Sky is my personal favorite from the album. This song is about the day after 9/11 and how the sky was empty, as the title suggests. Springsteen’s striking vocals shine as he tries to sing out the pain of the attacks. While managing to capture even more of a bleak tone than “Wake Me Up When September Ends,” it has its place in the list due to its tone for those overcast days.
“September” by Earth, Wind & Fire
The first happy song to be featured on the playlist is this upbeat dance song. Filled with positive, infectious energy due to its vocals and beat, it is almost impossible not to start nodding your head or singing along when it gets to the chorus.
“Somewhere Only We Know” by Keane
While this song sounds like it has a rather somber meaning due to the slower tempo and beat, the song is mostly about reflecting on having someone or something that is always there for you. Unlike the other slow songs on this list, the beat of this song is very catchy and exciting. So much so that when the chorus hits, it is hard not to start singing along with it.
“The Great Pumpkin Waltz” by Vince Guaraldi
Nothing screams fall time more than The Peanuts. “It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown” is a classic fall movie, and this song is one of the reasons. Whether you spend your fall days sitting around cozied up, getting ready to watch some Sunday afternoon football or you’re outside enjoying the weather, this song transports you to those moments.
“November Rain” by Guns N’ Roses
Like many of the songs previously mentioned so far, “November Rain” is a rock ballad akin to the previously mentioned Green Day song. This song is about the feeling of someone you love not feeling the same way about you. Fall is essentially the ultimate moody season as it gets colder at night and darker sooner. It is hard not to long for that special someone, which makes this a perfect inclusion to your fall playlist.
“Sofia” by Clairo
Bringing a lo-fi vibe to the playlist, “Sofia” is a great feel-good song that is insanely catchy. The beats have you bobbing your head and singing along with the chorus. Clairo’s voice is also extremely light and helps make the song as great and catchy as it is.
