Student Government passed a resolution for student outreach regarding voting on Election Day and sat numerous at-large members to committees during Wednesday night’s Senate meeting. 

Sen. Noah Kammeyer, a sophomore in political science, introduced the Inspiring Voting Outreach To Encourage Democracy On Campus resolution (I V.O.T.E.D.). The resolution will encourage Student Government to work with the Carrie Chapman Catt Center for Women and Politics and other organizations to promote voter registration and in-person voting for the Nov. 5 general and presidential election. The resolution passed in a unanimous vote.

When Vice Speaker Josie Pursley, a junior in political science, asked Kammeyer what Student Government could do to encourage students to vote, Kammeyer said his idea was to help share where polling sites are on and off campus. 

“An idea I had originally was to work with the PR committee to display where polling sites are on campus, and just having that information out there so whether you’re on campus or off campus, you know where to vote on Election Day,” Kammeyer said. “Also, reposting content the Catt Center has been pouring out the last few months in terms of registering to vote whether that’s here in Iowa or out-of-state.”

Other business

The following students were seated as at-large members of the Sustainability committee:

• Raquel Tenbrink, a junior in environmental science
• Molly Rogers, a sophomore in environmental science
• Evan Baker, a senior in environmental science

“I’m really excited for this opportunity to join this committee to make campus more sustainable, not just environmentally but socially and economically as well,” Rogers said. “One of the subcommittees that really stands out to me is the volunteer committee. I’ve volunteered all through high school and I’m really excited to work with organizations on campus and around Ames as well.”

Additionally, the following students were seated as at-large members of the Health and Wellness Committee:

• Grace Pavnica, a sophomore in biology
• Maci Juenger, a sophomore in biology

“I recently became aware of the Health and Wellness Committee through SHOP, I volunteer there weekly and became interested in what the committee does,” Pavnica said. “I just want to bring more students aware of what the Health and Wellness Committee does and what they do throughout Iowa State and how students can take advantage of what the committee does.”

The next Senate meeting is at 6 p.m. Wednesday night in the Memorial Union Campanile Room.
