On Sheldon Avenue, near the Dunkin’ Donuts, there is a small thrift store run by the Collegiate United Methodist Church. This thrift store goes by the name Clothing That Works and I must say, it’s true. They’ve got clothing that works.
I stopped in to check out their selection of clothes and was greeted by a welcoming staff. All of this store’s items are free, with no catch. There is no charge for shopping, only limits on the amount of certain items you can take, like shoes and coats. This store is run by volunteers and operates with the help of monetary and clothing donations.
The staff members informed me that they appreciate any donations, but right now, they are low on male clothing items and t-shirts specifically. The staff also informed me that the one thing they wanted students to know is that everyone is welcome to come shop around or donate.
Although their selection is smaller than an average Goodwill, there were a lot of quality pieces in the store. I saw leather jackets, dress pants, jeans, sweaters and more. If you are in need of some basics, like socks, Clothing That Works has a partnership with Bombas and they recently received a large donation of new, unused socks.
If you are interested in visiting this thrift store, you can enter the north entrance of the building and go up one flight of stairs. There are no dressing rooms at the establishment, but you can take the clothes and return them the following week if they do not work for you.
Hours are limited to 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday and 9 a.m. to noon on the first Saturday of each month. This is the only time available for dropping off donations as well.
