The Iowa State swimming and diving team lost its first Big 12 meet of the year against TCU 214-67 Friday.
In another road test the day after, the Cyclones lost to North Texas 165-135 in Denton, Texas.
TCU Takeaways
With the Cyclones’ loss, their all-time record against TCU moves to 6-3-1.
TCU came out hot, winning the first four events. Graduate student Winter Craig helped right the ship by winning the 200 fly with a time of 2:03.65.
The Horned Frogs won every event after the 200 fly, finishing the meet winning 14 of the 15 events.
Despite the blowout, many Cyclone swimmers and divers were able to put together strong individual performances. Iowa State had nine podium finishes in the meet.
Senior Mallory Miller placed third in the 1,650 free (17:47.36). In the 100 backstroke, sophomore Emma Kuhn placed third (58.00).
Graduate student Andie Quirke finished second in the 100 freestyle (52.63). Craig placed top two again, finishing second in the 100 butterfly (57.06).
In 1-meter diving, junior Ally Blumenfeld (290.85) and freshman Maggie Bendell (289.58) earned NCAA Zone Cut qualifiers honors.
Four Cyclones earned NCAA Zone Cut qualifiers honors in 3-meter diving. Junior Kate Mitchell and Bendell qualified for the second time, while freshman Abby Tollefson and Blumenfeld earned honors for the first time this season.
North Texas Takeaways
This was the third matchup in history between the Cyclones and the Mean Green. The all-time record now sits at 2-1 with Iowa State in front.
It was a strong performance in defeat and a good way to bounce back from a crushing TCU loss. Iowa State won three of the 15 events and had several podium finishes.
The Cyclones started strong in the 200 medley. The relay team of Kuhn, freshman Grace Swoboda, senior Carley Caughron and Quirke took second with a time of 1:47.30.
Junior Madi Dohrn placed second in the 200 backstroke (2:04.44) while Kuhn finished third (2:07.49).
Junior Corinne Guist secured first place in the 1000 free (10:32.68). Swoboda continued her strong season by taking first place in the 200 breastroke with a time of 2:22.83, and Miller dominated the 400 IM (4:31.93).
Craig got her seventh and eighth podium finish of the season, placing second in the 200 fly (2:05.81) and third in the 100 fly (58.07).
The diving squad had a strong showing. In the 1-meter diving event, Tollefson took second with a score of 283.73. Mitchell (275.25), Blumenfeld (270.00) and Bendell (267.90) secured third, fourth and fifth respectively. All earned NCAA Zone Cut qualifiers honors.
Mitchell placed second in the 3-meter dive (290.18), Bendell (278.03), and Blumenfeld (277.43) finished fourth and fifth.
The Cyclones will head to Lawrence, Kansas, for their second Big 12 meet against the Jayhawks on Feb. 7.
