Evan Peters gets “aww’s” and The Great DuBois create awe during ISU AfterDark

American Horror Story actor Evan Peters was in the Great Hall of the Memorial Union on Sept. 28. Peters took part in a Q&A monitored by junior Les Mwirichia. Peters left the crowd with some advice, “If you have a dream, you want to go after it, you want to do it just do it.”

The Memorial Union was brimming with students eager to see Evan Peters and The Great DuBois perform live Friday night for ISU AfterDark.

Peters started off his show by hyping up the crowd with an Iowa State “Cyclone Power” chant. The audience was filled with impatient energy to see what Peters had in store for them. Lester Mwirichia interviewed Peters with a series of questions about his previous and upcoming works as well as some tidbits about his personal life. Mwirichia asked Peters about what it was like first getting into acting.

“I just took each role one at a time,” Peters said. “It’s an honor to be a part of ‘American Horror Story.’ It’s such an immersive experience.”

Mwirichia went on to ask Peters questions about his personal life, including his new fiancée Emma Roberts who co-stars with him on “American Horror Story.”

“I knew I wanted to make her my wife,” Peters said. “We were best friends, we make each other laugh all the time. We have responsibilities with each other and we work together really well.”

Audience members gave heartwarming reactions to Peters’ stories with scattered “aww’s,” laughter and visible glee.

Mwirichia ended the interview with a question that gave hope to prospective actors, asking Peters what advice he has for aspiring young-actor.

“Stay in school,” Peters said. “It sounds super cheesy, but if you have a dream, you bust your a** and you do it.”

Peters’ answer generated boisterous applause from the audience as they gave a sad good-bye to the actor.

Preceding Evan Peters was The Great DuBois, with the great Michael DuBois and Viktoria Grimmy.

DuBois started his show by pulling a member of the audience up on stage and utilizing her throughout his juggling routines. The crowd was in awe as his juggling act was choreographed to music and got more and more intense as it went on. DuBois explained that he is one of 50 people in the world who can juggle seven balls at once.

Even when DuBois made a mistake in his juggling routines, he played it off as a joke and made the audience uproarious with laughter.

DuBois is not a one-trick-pony by any means though. He enticed the audience with gross-out humor by inserting a deflated balloon his nasal cavity and out his mouth, asking for a volunteer for the audience to pull it out, soliciting applause and a borderline-frightened reaction from the audience.

Alongside DuBois was Viktoria Grimmy who impressed with her balance and contortion skills. She was recently featured in “The Greatest Showman” for her exceptional talents.

Grimmy started her routine with a dangerous balance-beam act that enthralled the audience. Her beautiful movements took a quite literal turn when she showed off her contortion moves. She impressed the audience with the abrupt cracks of her whip as she cut flowers held by DuBois in half from across the stage.

The next ISU AfterDark this semester will be Friday, Nov. 2. The event will feature stand-up comedian, Ron Funches, and performance painter David Garibaldi.
