Five Cyclones were invited to try out in front of NFL scouts in preparation for the NFL draft, which will be held in late April, with wide receivers Jaylin Noel and Jayden Higgins, defensive backs Darien Porter and Malik Verdon and offensive lineman Jalen Travis all participating in the events.
Here is a look at how they performed.
Noel explodes for monster performance
After an impressive showing at the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama, Noel looked to build off his success by performing well at the NFL Combine.
Needless to say, Noel might’ve had the best all-around performance out of all the Iowa State participants in Indianapolis, as he was the only Cyclone to take part in every drill available.
In the 40-yard dash, Noel put up a time of 4.39 seconds, with a 1.51 10-yard split, which ranked 10th in the group of wide receivers.
While Noel’s speed impressed, it was the other aspects that caught the eyes of NFL scouts, as he was among the top in other categories.
At a 5-foot 11-inch 200-pound frame, Noel finished first in the vertical (41.50 inches), broad jump (11-feet 2-inches) and bench press (23 reps), while being top-six in the 3-cone drill (6.82 seconds) and 20-yard shuttle (4.17 seconds).
After coming off a career-best year at Iowa State with a 1,000-yard season, Noel will look to continue his success at the next level with his combine performance helping improve his NFL draft stock.
Porter shines with his athleticism
Along with Noel, Porter was able to show off his athleticism by being amongst the best in his position group in various categories.
Despite not participating in the bench press, Porter put up top numbers in other categories, such as the 40-yard dash, where he was second in the cornerback group with a time of 4.30 seconds but was first in the 10-yard split with a time of 1.49 seconds. Porter’s dash was the fastest out of the five Cyclones that participated in Indianapolis.
While Porter sat ninth in the vertical at 36.50 inches, he still came in second in the broad jump at 10-feet 11-inches while being first in both the 3-cone drill (6.71 seconds) and the 20-yard shuttle (4.04 seconds).
Porter’s 3-cone drill and 20-yard shuttle scores would also lead the Iowa State players who tried out at the combine over the week.
After having a big senior season at cornerback for the Cyclones, the Bettendorf, Iowa, native will be looking to be drafted early on, with his eyes set on being picked in the first round based on his athletic abilities.

Higgins performs well behind Noel
While his cohort Noel stole the show for the Iowa State receivers, Higgins still put up good numbers at the combine with his 6-foot 4-inch 215-pound frame.
In the 40-yard dash, Higgins put up a time of 4.47 seconds, with a 10-yard split of 1.53 seconds. While the numbers may not be as impressive as Noel’s, Higgins put these numbers up as a bigger-bodied receiver, which is impressive, to say the least.
Along with the dash, Higgins competed in the vertical (39 inches) and broad jump (10-feet 8-inches) to end his time at the combine. He finished sixth and eighth in those categories, respectively.
After putting up his lone 1,000-yard season in his last season as a Cyclone after being just 17 yards short a season prior, Higgins will look to put his talents to good use with his size and frame leading the way.

Travis impresses among talented group
In a class of talented offensive linemen, it would be a challenge for Travis to stand out, especially since he only had one year as a Cyclone aside from his time at Princeton to face better competition.
But Travis took this as an opportunity to shine, as he put up good numbers at the combine after only giving up one sack in his lone season at Iowa State.
While Travis’ 40-yard dash (5.14 seconds) and 10-yard split (1.80 seconds) times were not among the best, he still placed in the top 20 in both categories and finished 16th and 20th in each, respectively.
But the two other categories that Travis did excel in were the vertical (35 inches) and broad jump (9-feet 4-inches). He finished second and fourth, respectively.
To wrap up his time at the combine, Travis hit the bench press workout, in which he would put up 26 reps and sit in a three-way tie for seventh best out of the offensive linemen group.
While Travis won’t be expected to be drafted early, his combine performance should help him find a spot on some team in the mid-to-later rounds of the draft.

Verdon participates in 3-cone drill and 20-yard shuttle
As with the other four Cyclones that participated in the combine, Verdon came into the weekend strong after putting up a strong senior season at Iowa State, which saw him take Second Team All-Big 12 honors at the defensive back position.
But for Verdon, he was only able to participate in two drills at the combine, those being the 3-cone drill and 20-yard shuttle as a safety.
In the 3-cone drill, Verdon finished third among his group with a time of 7.06 seconds. In the 20-yard shuttle, he placed sixth among the safeties group at 4.34 seconds.
Only participating in two drills at the combine doesn’t help Verdon’s case of being drafted highly or at all, but with his four seasons as a Cyclone and with the two drills he did, Verdon will be looking to make an impact wherever he may go.
