Going into the Big 12 Championships, Iowa State had to put up top marks to keep itself in the top 36 to push for regionals. Ultimately, the Cyclones took one of two wins. The final scores were BYU 196.275, Iowa State 195.775 and 194.875 for West Virginia.
Team results
Opening the meet on beam, the Cyclones took second place with a 49.100. The Cougars found their way to score .050 higher to eke past the Cyclones.
Moving to the floor, Iowa State put up a 49.050 and took third place in the event.
With a 48.800 on vault, the Cyclones took second place and earned their lowest score of the meet. In an event where Iowa State usually thrives, things looked rough.
Once again, BYU scored .100 higher than the Cyclones to take another close first-place spot.
Iowa State earned 48.825 in the final rotation and second place on uneven bars.
Two Cyclone gymnasts took spots in the top five all-around scores. Senior Josie Bergstrom Te-Slaa took second place with 39.000.
Freshman Frederique Sgarbossa took fourth place with a 29.300. Sgarbossa competed in all events except the floor routine.
Individual leaders
Sgarbossa placed first on the beam with a 9.875 and tied with two other BYU gymnasts. This was also the highest score among the entire team’s individual scorers.
Fifth-year Lauren Thomas also placed in the top five on beam with a 9.850 and was part of a four-way fourth-place tie with BYU and West Virginia gymnasts.
Two Iowa State gymnasts took the top five spots on its floor routines. Sophomore Noelle Adams and standout freshman Haylee Hardin earned 9.850 scores and were part of a five-way tie with Cougar and Mountaineer gymnasts.
Sophomore Paige Wills took second place on vault with a 9.825.
Rounding out individual scores, two Iowa State gymnasts earned 9.800 scores on uneven bars, and both tied for third.
Cyclones hope their Big 12 championship performance was enough to push for regionals
With a second-place spot in the first session of the Big 12 championships, Iowa State now awaits to see if they rank within the top 36 teams across the NCAA to earn a spot at regionals, along with seeing if any individual gymnasts make regionals.
Regardless of where the team will end up in the upcoming weeks, the next season looks to be led by newcomers like Hardin and Sgarbossa.
This season has been nothing short of impressive despite harsh outcomes for the Cyclones. All Iowa State can do is hope to continue its season at regionals.
