No. 56 Iowa State beat Utah 4-3 on Saturday in Salt Lake City. The Cyclones are now 10-8 overall and 4-6 in conference.
This was the first match in school history against the Utes. Iowa State is 1-0 all-time against Utah.
Utah’s Sara Akid and Emma Valletta landed the first blow. They beat Cyclone freshmen Julia Camblor and Cristina Ramos Sierra 6-3 on court No. 2.
The Utes’ Emma Kamper and Hayley Roberts followed suit with the second doubles win to clinch the doubles point. They beat senior Anna Supapitch Kuearum and freshman Mari Paz Alberto Vilar 6-3 on court No. 1.
Down 1-0 early, No. 72-ranked Kuearum got Iowa State its first point with her school-record 17th career conference singles win. She beat Akid 6-2, 6-2 on court No. 2.
The Utes came right back with a singles win of their own. Kamper topped Camblor 7-6, 6-1 on court No. 1.
Iowa State freshman Suzanie Pretorius tied the match again with her win. Pretorius beat Roberts 6-4, 6-2 on court No. 5.
Sophomore Valeska San Martin Ramirez gave the Cyclones their first lead of the afternoon. Ramirez beat Dylan Lolofie 6-1, 1-6, 6-3 on court No. 6.
Kaila Barksdale rebuked Iowa State’s lead and tied the match again for Utah. Barksdale dispatched Vilar 2-6, 6-3, 6-1 on court No. 3.
With the game coming down to the final match, Ramos Sierra delivered for Iowa State. She beat Valletta 7-6, 3-6, 6-3 on court No. 4.
Iowa State’s next match is against Kansas from the Ames Tennis Facility at noon Saturday.
