Four Cyclones went into the regional round of the gymnastics postseason in search of making it to regional finals. Ultimately, none of those gymnasts qualified.
Those four gymnasts competed in their respective events against five other schools. Those schools were Air Force, Boise State, Minnesota, Southern Utah and UCLA.
Bergstrom Te-Slaa’s all-around performance
Senior Josie Bergstrom-Te Slaa competed all-around and earned a 37.900 to take sixth place. Bergstrom-Te Slaa started the meet on uneven bars and earned a 9.275 to tie for 22nd place with two-time Olympian and Bruins gymnast Jordan Chiles.
Moving to the balance beam, Bergstrom-Te Slaa placed 25th with a 9.575. With an 8.775 on floor exercise, Bergstrom-Te Slaa took 28th place.
Bergstrom-Te Slaa wrapped her performances up with vault, where she earned a 9.825 and took 13th place. This score was tied for the highest by a Cyclone during this meet.
Event specialists’ performances
The first event specialist to take on regionals was sophomore Noelle Adams, who competed in floor exercise. Adams earned a 9.775 and tied for 20th place.
In the second rotation, freshman Frederique Sgarbossa took on the uneven bars and scored 9.700. Sgarbossa tied for 24th place with a Minnesota gymnast.
Wrapping up event specialists, freshman Haylee Hardin earned a 9.825 on floor routine. Hardin was part of a three-way tie for 14th place.
With that 9.825, both Hardin and Bergstrom-Te Slaa tied for the highest score among the Cyclones.
Season reflection
As Iowa State puts another season behind, a lot of things need to be thought about going into next season. After going 8-16 on the season, the opportunity for growth should be the focus ahead.
With the season being over, the Cyclones will lose five gymnasts: Bergstrom-Te Slaa, Hannah Loyim, Emma Ricks, Rachel Wilke and fifth-year Lauren Thomas.
This guts the team of some top performers, especially Bergstrom-Te Slaa, who filled a big role as an all-around gymnast this season.
Despite losing some keystone gymnasts, a few stars will remain with the team.
From Adams to Hardin and Sgarbossa, the success of this team will continue to flourish as young talent looks to lead the team next season.
