Iowa State competed in the Tiger Collegiate Invitational this week hosted by the University of Missouri. After a rough first two rounds, the Cyclones made a strong push in the third to jump up five places into a tie with Drake for ninth place.
Leading the way for the Cyclones was junior Paul Beauvy. Beauvy tied for 26th place shooting seven-over-par. Par was 70 on this course.
Second for the Cyclones was junior Zach May. The Kiwi shot nine-over-par to place tied for 40th.
He was closely followed by teammate sophomore Owen Sawyer. The Iowa native tied for 44th with 10-over-par.
Tying for 55th was senior Luke Gutschewski, shooting twelve-over-par. Dianchao Wu finished things off tied for 77th with sixteen-over-par for the sophomore.
While the result was not what the Cyclones had seen in the last few meets, this was a strong performance from Iowa State. Finishing behind conference foes Kansas State and Cincinnati, they will have some work to do to catch their Big 12 competition in two weeks when they meet for the Big 12 Championship in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Round by round:
Round 1. Beauvy and Gutschewski led the way with one-over-par through the first 18 holes.
Round 2. May and Sawyer took this round for the Cyclones, each with a +4, while Beauvy dropped to +6 for round two and Gutschewski added +7.
Round 3. Beauvy, Sawyer and Wu all shot even to propel the Cyclones from 14th to ninth place.
