A future Cyclone can now add gold medalist to an already impressive list of accolades.

Ashley Joens, an incoming freshman for the Iowa State women’s basketball team, won a gold medal on Tuesday night playing for Team USA at the FIBA U18 Americas Championship in Mexico City.

Team USA routed Canada in the championship match 84-60, marking their ninth straight championship in the tournament. Joens hit two three-pointers and scored a total of 10 points in the final, which was right around her tournament average of 10.7 points per game.

A consensus five-star recruit and 26th-ranked player in the country by ESPN for the class of 2018, the Iowa City native became the first Cyclone to win gold for Team USA.

In addition to her 10.7 points per game, which ranked second on the team, Joens also averaged 4.5 rebounds and 2.2 assists in the tournament. Joens was originally selected to the team as an alternate, but was elevated to the active roster back in June after a strong showing at tryouts.

Joens will be with the Iowa State women’s basketball team next week when they travel to Costa Rica to play three exhibition games against club teams.
