From late-night Friley Windows to Jeff’s Pizza, Cyclone hunger does not slow when the sun goes down.
Nicolas Foor, a freshman in materials engineering, said Superdog is the place to be when hunger strikes after dark. The specialty hot-dog stand is open late at night every Wednesday through Saturday on Welch Avenue by the clock tower and serves long lines of hungry students well past midnight.
“Superdog is my favorite late-night stop on the weekends,” Foor said.
Foor relies on late-night Friley Windows on weeknights when possible, using his Cardinal Plan, but explains that dining hall hours are limited Saturdays and Sundays.
“The weekend is kind of rough whenever you’re trying to eat past 8 p.m., and if you wake up late, you miss breakfast and have to wait until 4:30 p.m. when the halls open again,” Foor said.
Hannah Cordova, a senior in aerospace engineering, prefers to use her flex meals for her late-night snacking needs, which allows students with specific meal plans to use a meal swipe for up to $13.50 of food at certain on-campus spots.
Cordova’s favorite stop late at night is Jeff’s Pizza on Lincoln Way. “It’s definitely a solid pick, especially on weekends,” Cordova said.
Late-night snacking is a necessity to fuel young minds. One of the main reasons students stay up so late is studying and homework.
Late-night Friley Windows is a popular spot for students heading back from Parks Library, as it’s open until 11 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and often serves a variety of sweet treats and a resident favorite, Windows ice cream.
Other student favorites include the tried-and-true dorm diet necessities, like microwave noodles, mac and cheese and Minute Rice.
“My go-to is ramen… of any quality,” Foor said.
Foor says that his cooking would benefit from more counter space in his dorm kitchenette, as he occasionally goes all out, making full meals with a variety of ingredients and dishes in Wilson Hall.
Other midnight meal spots on Welch Avenue are Omar’s Gyro, Mr. Burrito and Insomnia Cookies, all of which are open past midnight most of the week.
Jeff’s and Superdog were both recently visited and reviewed by vlogger and businessman Dave Portnoy from Barstool Sports, bringing more local attention to these after-hours stops.
