The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) has one candidate running for the sole seat in the Iowa State University Student Government Senate.
The candidate is Jacob Schilling, a sophomore majoring in agronomy.
The Student Government elections will take place March 3-4, and ballots will be emailed to students’ Iowa State email addresses.
Student Government exists to serve and represent all students, according to the student organization database. They annually distribute $2.6 million in student fee revenue to organizations on campus and in Story County.
The following interview with Schilling was conducted by email.
What are your qualifications for being a Senator?
“I am qualified because I actively participate in the CALS community through various organizations, demonstrating a steady and reliable work ethic. I am a good listener, I follow through on commitments, and I consistently show up to do the work without seeking attention or credit. My strength lies in my consistency rather than in flashy displays.”
What are the most significant issues facing your constituents, and how will you address them?
“A significant issue is that most students are unaware of the services the Student Government offers, particularly in club funding and project support. The problem lies in a communication gap rather than a lack of resources. If more CALS clubs understood what resources were available, more students would benefit. To enhance outreach to clubs, it’s essential to go beyond simply sending information and hoping for engagement. Actively participating in club meetings, posting CALS-specific updates and creating a straightforward guide on how clubs can apply for funding would greatly increase the Student Government’s visibility and usefulness to students.”
What role(s) have you held in Student Government and when?
“I am currently a member of our PR committee and looking to join a new committee soon.”
Why do you want to return to Student Government, and what are you most proud of during your time in Student Government?
“I was seated as a CALS Senator in the middle of last semester (at the end of October). In my short time in the Senate, my Co-partner, Delaney Greif, and I have recently started a project that would benefit many CALS students and the entire student body.”
