The concluding meet for the Iowa State swim and dive team showcased the talent of some of the best swimmers in the nation, with the Cyclones’ top three putting up memorable performances.
March 12
The first Cyclone to dive into the water in Florida for Iowa State was freshman Kendall Mallers, who competed in the 50-yard butterfly event. Mallers swam the two lengths in 25.26 seconds, a slightly slower time than her seed time that qualified her for the event. Mallers placed 26th overall.
Next up on the deck was sophomore Anja Peck, who began her meet in the 200-yard individual medley. Peck entered with a seed time of 2:04.38, which brought her to Ocala, Florida.
In the preliminaries, Peck improved on that mark, swimming the 200 yards in 2:03.34 and placing 25th out of 60 competitors.
Finishing up day one for Iowa State was sophomore Grace Swoboda. Swoboda first competed in the 50-yard breaststroke, one of her signature events. She had a strong showing, placing second out of 52 swimmers with a time of 28.14 seconds to earn a spot in the A finals.
Swoboda then placed third in the finals with an even faster time of 28.08.
Swoboda also competed in the 50-yard freestyle, swimming slightly slower than her seed time with a mark of 24.01 seconds.
March 13
On Friday, Swoboda added another strong performance with a second-place finish in the preliminary round of the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:01.28. That time earned her another A finals appearance, where she finished her second swim even faster in 1:00.26.
Peck also competed in the 100-yard breaststroke, finishing with a time of 1:03.04 to place 26th overall.
Mallers swam in the 100-yard butterfly Friday, finishing her race in 56.98 seconds.
The 400-yard individual medley was another event for Peck, who finished in 4:24.92, placing 26th overall.
March 14
The final day of competition for the Cyclones featured two 200-yard events. Peck and Swoboda both competed in the 200-yard breaststroke, while Mallers took part in the 200-yard butterfly at the FAST Aquatic Center.
Peck and Swoboda both delivered strong performances in the 200-yard breaststroke preliminaries, placing in the top 12 out of 48 swimmers.
Peck placed fourth overall with a time of 2:12.97, while Swoboda finished 12th in 2:14.81. Both advanced to the finals, with Peck finishing fifth in the A finals and Swoboda placing 11th.
Mallers placed 31st in the 200-yard butterfly, recording a time of 2:04.16 in the preliminaries to conclude the Cyclones’ season.
