AMES — More than 1,000 supporters have signed a petition launched by former Iowa State gymnasts calling for the return of the Cyclones’ gymnastics program.
The petition urges Iowa State Athletics and the Iowa Board of Regents to reconsider the decision to discontinue the program, as alumni and former athletes rally support to restore the sport in Ames.
Melanie Tham, a former Iowa State Gymnast and member of the Canadian national team, organized the petition. You can view and sign the full petition here.
“Reinstating the program will reaffirm Iowa State’s dedication to the success of women’s sports and allow Iowa State to offer a diverse and inclusive athletic environment,” Tham states in the petition. “It is paramount that the university administration reconsiders this decision and allocates the necessary resources to support these athletes, as their dedication and hard work contribute significantly to the university’s reputation and vibrancy.”
Tham said she and other alumni have reached out to Iowa State Athletics regarding this issue. Tham received the following response about Iowa State gymnastics from Senior Associate Athletics Director Shamaree Brown on Feb. 9:
Melanie,
Thank you for taking the time to share your perspective and experiences as an Iowa State gymnast.
Our goal is always to ensure that every student-athlete has the supportive, meaningful, and competitive experience they deserve. When concerns arise, we have a responsibility to pause, listen, and evaluate to make sure we are acting in the best interest of our student athletes and the long-term health of the program.
Thank you again for reaching out and for your continued pride in Iowa State Gymnastics and Cyclone Athletics.
Sincerely,
Shamaree [Brown]
Tham also gave the Iowa State Daily the following statement:
As alumni of the gymnastics program at Iowa State, we write out of deep respect for the athletes, traditions, and opportunities that have long defined gymnastics at Iowa State University.
The decision to end the gymnastics program has deeply concerned all of us who once had the privilege of wearing the Cyclone uniform. For athletes who committed their time, energy, and trust to the university, losing the opportunity to compete is the loss of an irreplaceable NCAA experience.
Gymnastics at Iowa State has historically been a source of pride for the university and its community and alumni, fans, and former athletes believe strongly that the program deserves to be reinstated.
For those who share this belief, we encourage students, alumni, and supporters to add their voices. A petition calling on the Board of Regents to reinstate the gymnastics program is currently circulating, and every signature helps demonstrate that this program matters to the Cyclone community.
Together, we can support the athletes and advocate for the future of Iowa State gymnastics.
