LAWRENCE — Iowa State fell 4-2 in eight innings on Saturday afternoon against the Jayhawks in Lawrence, Kansas. Anna Soles hit a walk-off two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to win it for Kansas.
Just like last weekend in game two at BYU, the Cyclones blew a late lead. That game also ended in a walk-off home run.
The Cyclones now look ahead to a makeup doubleheader against St. Thomas Tuesday and Drake on Wednesday. Tuesday’s games will start at 1:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. from the Cyclone Sports Complex and the first pitch of Wednesday’s game is set for 5 p.m. in Des Moines.
Cyclones build lead early
Senior centerfielder Tatum Johnson got the Cyclones on the board in the first inning with a solo home run to left field. Her home run hit was her 11th this season.
Senior first baseman Sydney Malott built on the Cyclones’ scoring with an RBI double in the top of the fourth to make it 2-0. Malott batted in sophomore second baseman Kadence Shepherd, who hit a double right before Malott.
Schurman holds Kansas hitless in innings two through five
Junior pitcher Lauren Schurman gave up a single to senior outfielder Presley Limbaugh on her third pitch of the game. From that point through the end of the fifth inning, Schurman didn’t give up a single hit, only walked one batter and hit one batter.
However, in the sixth inning, Schurman walked two batters before giving up an RBI single to Hailey Cripe. After that, senior pitcher Jaiden Ralston replaced Schurman for the rest of the game.
Deja vu dooms Cyclones for second straight weekend
Senior infielder Campbell Bagshaw’s RBI single to left field tied the game at 2-2. With senior pinch runner Madi Hays headed toward home to try to take the lead, sophomore left fielder Jessie Clemons’ throw to the plate was in time for out three.
After neither team could score any tie-breaking runs in the seventh inning, the Cyclones were headed to their third extra-inning game this season.
Malott’s single at the top of the eighth inning put Shepherd into scoring position on second, but junior pinch runner Ireland Buss was struck out looking to send the game to the bottom of the eighth.
After walking freshman designated player Ella Boyer, Ralston gave up a walk-off home run that Soles put over the right field wall. That home run dropped the Cyclones to 28-21 on the season and 8-13 in conference play.
