A union of local organizations is partnering this summer to host “Echoes of Resilience: LGBTQ+ Experiences in the U.S.” Throughout the summer, these organizations are working together to present a community film and discussion series covering many important topics for the LGBTQ+ community. The series will explore the history, complexity and lived experiences of LGBTQ+ Americans.
The series will take place from 6:00 to 8:30 p.m. every Tuesday from June 9 to July 28 at the Ames Public Library. Each gathering will feature a film screening followed by a guided discussion designed to encourage reflection. The program is free and open to the public.
Organizers say the series reflects a community-wide effort to honor the many ways LGBTQ+ people have contributed to American life and culture, all while creating a welcoming space for connection and learning.
“At a time when many people are seeking connection, bringing together organizations from across the community, including religious groups, civic organizations and advocates for justice, we aim to create space for inclusion, solidarity and hope,” Rev. Kelli Clement said.
The local library, faith communities, non-profit organizations and social justice groups host the series. Through film and conversation, organizers hope participants will engage in discussions surrounding LGBTQ+ identities while gaining a better understanding of the historical context.
The goal is more than just educating; Organizers say the series is intended to foster community. Participants are encouraged to have meaningful dialogue. Moreover, there’s an opportunity for people to connect across different backgrounds and perspectives.
