One of the region’s most beloved traditions is set to return. Scandinavian Days, Story City’s signature annual festival, is this weekend. The event features cultural celebrations and a tribute to the area’s Nordic roots.
In 1965, Scandinavian Days was created to honor the Danish, Swedish and Norwegian immigrants who settled in Story County in the 19th century. More than six decades later, the festival remains a reminder of the heritage that shaped the community.
The celebration runs from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m June 5 and 6. Throughout the days, a variety of traditions highlight the culture. Attendees can try Nordic foods like kringla and kumla while watching folk dancing performances. They can also explore real Viking ship displays that show the history and customs of the area’s early settlers.
One of the festival’s biggest attractions is Story City’s historic carousel. The antique carousel is 108 years old and, in North Park, often serves as a centerpiece of the festival. Other attractions, like local artisans and activities for visitors, surround it.
Beyond its cultural significance, Scandinavian Days has become one of Story City’s largest community gatherings. For many, the festival celebrates local traditions. The event also supports non-profit organizations through fundraising, such as the bake sale.
This year, the celebration once again has the crowd favorites. There is a parade, fireworks, a 5k race and eating contests. Together, these events create a weekend that blends culture and community. For Story County, Scandinavian Days is more than just a festival. It is a celebration of the people who built the community. It creates a way to ensure those stories continue to be shared with future generations.
Residents interested in attending can find event schedules, maps and other information through the Scandinavian Days Facebook page or the Story City website.
