A strong summer for Iowa State golf continues with two former Cyclone men’s golfers qualifying for the U.S. Senior Open.

After former Cyclone women’s golfer Celia Barquin Arozamena qualified for the U.S. Women’s Open at the end of May, Jon Petersen and Ned Zachar will tee it up this week at The Broadmoor in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Petersen is a teaching professional currently working in Omaha, Neb., and he recently played in the PGA Professionals Championship from June 17-20. Petersen, a 1989 graduate of Iowa State, qualified by shooting a 70 at Briarwood Golf Club in Ankeny, Iowa.

Zachar qualified by shooting a 69 at the Suburban Golf Club in Union, New Jersey. Zachar played for the men’s golf team at Iowa State from 1982 to 1985.

The U.S. Senior Open will take place Thursday through Sunday, with coverage all week on FOX and Fox Sports 1.
