Former Iowa State golfers Jon Petersen and Ned Zachar teed off in the first round of the U.S. Senior Open on Thursday.

For most golfers, posting a round under par at the East Course at Broadmoor Country Club in Colorado Springs, Colorado is considered a very difficult task. That statement was proven true Thursday, as only eight golfers finished under par.

What makes the course difficult is the terrain and altitude. The East Course at Broadmoor Country Club is a very long course at 7,335 yards long, and the course sits at an elevation of 6,230 feet.

Petersen started off his round with four bogeys on his first four holes. He followed those holes with pars and one bogey, to finish off his first nine holes with a score of 5-over-par.

Petersen shot 5-over-par on his second nine and finished with a score of 10-over-par 80 for his round.

Zachar (who is playing as an amateur this week) had a very eventful first nine in which he posted one double bogey, four bogeys, two pars, two birdies and finished with a score of 4-over-par for his first nine.

After making the turn to his second nine, Zachar posted a score of 4-over-par on his second nine and finished his round with a score of 8-over-par 78.

Petersen is currently tied for 123rd, while Zachar currently sits at tied for 107th.

Second-round coverage begins tomorrow at 2:30 p.p. on Fox Sports 1.
