Incoming Cyclone wrestler David Carr was named the recipient of the Dave Schultz High School Excellence Award (DSHSEA) by the National Wrestling Hall of Fame on Tuesday.

The award focuses on accomplishments in wrestling, scholastic achievement, citizenship and community service. The award was created in 1996 to honor Olympian Dave Schultz after he was murdered in January 1996.

“It’s an extreme honor for me to receive this award,” Carr said in a release. “I’m truly blessed. Dave Schultz was a legendary wrestler and it is so great that there is an award in his memory.

“The people who have received this award have gone on to do big things and accomplish the things I want to accomplish.”

Carr totaled four state championships in Ohio and one in Kentucky as an eighth grader. His high school career record was 188-6.

“Every year our committee has a difficult task determining the national winner for our Dave Schultz High School Excellence Award because there are so many deserving candidates,” said Executive Director Lee Roy Smith.

“We are pleased to name David Carr as our national winner and are confident that he will represent the sport in a positive manner as he continues his career.”
