Iowa went into Thursday with a 13-12 in the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series, with the fate of the year’s series depending on the Academic Progress Rate (APR) score.

The NCAA placed Iowa State’s APR score above Iowa’s, pushing the final score to 14-13 in Iowa State’s favor.

“What is awesome about the Iowa Corn series is that it allows Iowa State and Iowa to showcase their outstanding young women and men on the field and in the classroom,” Iowa State Athletic Director Jamie Pollard said in a release.

“We were most fortunate to win in one of the tightest competitions in series history but recognize that both schools did an outstanding job in the classroom this year.”

Late in the 2017-18 season, the Hawkeyes led 13-8. Gymnastics and softball rallied the Cyclones, pushing the score to 13-12 before the APR scores were released.

This year’s victory for Iowa State breaks a tie. The Cyclones now hold the all-time record 7-6-1.

“We were very fortunate to have our best-ever Academic Progress Rate score this year and we needed that performance to win the series by one point,” Pollard said in a release.
