How to get involved with Health and Wellness

College is the best years of your life, but balancing classes, friends, work — with all of the activity in your adventure, it’s important to make sure that you are holistically well.

Iowa State University Student Wellness has resources that can help you maintain and improve your overall wellness, broken down into the 8 Dimensions of Wellness. The 8 dimensions are Physical, Intellectual, Occupational, Spiritual, Environmental, Financial, Social and Emotional Wellness. 

Here’s a few Student Health and Wellness Organizations you can get involved with on Campus.

GREEN DOT

Green Dot is Iowa State’s newly implemented student bystander program promoting intervention in violent situations on campus at Iowa State.

Green Dot has really left it’s mark on Iowa State’s campus since it’s launch last September — you’ll see the iconic green stamp all over. From posters and signs, to the SafeRide and Iowa State Police vehicles. 

The Green Dot launch for the 2018-2019 school year is September 26th from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. 

CYDE KICKS

Presented by the Department of Kinesiology and Student Wellness, this Peer Health coaching program is designed to partner students with other trained students to help improve their overall wellness.

Student Wellness provides lots of resources to students for anything regarding health. 

Thielen Student Health Center

Feeling under the weather? The Thielen Health Center is an on-campus clinic on Union Drive with doctors, nurses and physicians to meet with regarding any of your health care needs.

Thielen also has a pharmacy where you can get your refills on your prescription medications. 

Their Hours are:

Monday 8 a.m. – 6 p.m.

Tuesday 8am – 5pm

Wednesday 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Thursday 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Friday 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Saturday 9 a.m. – 12 p.m.

ISU Student Counseling

The University offers a variety of counseling options, from individual therapy, and couples therapy to sports therapy and Veterinary Medicine therapy. Most f the therapy options are short term models, however they also provide career counseling and crisis intervention.

Iowa State also has a 24 hour Crisis text line available to students. Text ISU to 741-741, and you will be connected with a trained professional. In an emergency, call 911.

ISU Student Counseling is open Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. -5:00 p.m excluding university holidays and closings. Their office is in the Student Services building.

Iowa State Recreational Services

ISU Rec services has a number of facilities for all of your physical fitness needs. This includes several state of the art gyms — complete with rock walls, swimming pools and athletic courts — outdoor rec facilities, an ice arena, and more.

They provide a mutitude of services as well, including fitness classes, the Smarteats diet program and personal training. 

If you enjoy playing team sports, there are also intramural sports available.
