Three-star cornerback Joseph Thompson announced his commitment to Iowa State on Thursday.

Thompson, a 5-10 corner from Chicago, Illinois, will join the Cyclones as a member of the class of 2019. He is the seventh commit in that class and the second on the defensive side of the ball.

Thompson is ranked as the 94th-best cornerback in the class of 2019 by the 247Sports composite.

He reportedly held offers from schools such as Toledo, Northern Illinois and Illinois.

Iowa State’s defensive backs were a key part of the success in 2017. However, most of the starters were veterans and after 2018, the Cyclone defensive backfield will need to rebuild. Starting cornerbacks D’Andre Payne and Brian Peavy will graduate after 2018.
