The Cyclones started their Big 12 Conference games today, facing Oklahoma State in a seven-inning showdown that resulted in a final score of 8-1, in favor of the Cowgirls.

The scoring in Stillwater began in the bottom of the first inning when the Cowgirls’ Whitney Whitehorn ripped a grand slam into left field, scoring in Madi Sue Montgomery, Jessi Haffner, and Sydney Pennington.

The Cyclones would fail to respond, and the Cowgirls took advantage again in the bottom of the third inning.

Pennington would single to left field, scoring in Montgomery to place the Cowgirls ahead 5-0.

Cyclones would then hit their only scores of the day when Nychole Antillon singled to center field, advancing Kristen Caudle to second, scoring in Kaylee Bosworth. Taylor Nearad would be caught out in this process.

The Cowgirls would then respond to this by scoring three runs in bottom of the fifth.

It began with Maddi Holcomb grounding out to second base, scoring in Jamie Lowrie. That advanced Chelsea Alexander to third.

Alexander would then score on a Vanessa Shippy single, hit to the shortstop. Then, Taylor Pence would double to left field, scoring in Shippy. That brought the game to a score of 8-1.

The Cyclones had only one run out of the seven hits accumulated today.

Brianna Weilbacher pitched six innings, allowing four earned runs, eight total runs, eight hits, two doubles and struck out two batters.

Iowa State will return tomorrow for game two at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
