Iowa State volleyball announced its hire of Fiona Fonoti as an assistant coach on March 7.

The Cyclones had a coaching position to fill after Dawn Sullivan accepted a head coaching job at UNLV.

“I want to thank Christy, and everyone on her staff for welcoming me into the Cyclone volleyball family,” Fonoti said in a press release. “This opportunity is truly a blessing for me and my family. I am excited to begin this new journey at Iowa State University.”

Fonoti’s collegiate career followed a similar path as Iowa State head coach Christy Johnson-Lynch.

After Johnson-Lynch graduated from Nebraska as a setter, Fonoti adopted the starting setter position for the Cornhuskers.

Since Fonoti’s playing days, she’s spent her time coaching and teaching in Hawaii.

Fonoti’s latest coaching experience comes from being the assistant coach at Punahou High School in Honolulu, while acting as a personal setter coach at the Elite Serving Academy in Pearl City, Hawaii.

“Fiona is a winner,” Johnson-Lynch said in a press release. “She had a tremendous career as a student-athlete, and now as a teacher and coach she is beloved by her students and peers in her community.

“She is the kind of person I want in our program, and I am excited to have Fiona, her husband Chris and the rest of the family join our Cyclone family.”
