January 24, 2018
The Iowa State women’s basketball team snapped its two-game losing streak after upsetting No. 19 Oklahoma State. The Cyclones (9-11, 3-6 Big 12) lassoed the Cowgirls (14-5, 5-3 Big 12) in a 78-69 win in Stillwater.
A strong first quarter from Bridget Carleton, who posted six points, was not enough as Oklahoma State jumped out to a quick 20-13 lead. The Cowgirls shot an impressive 50 percent from the field, including 3-for-5 from behind the arc.
It was a near identical performance in the second quarter, however, the Cyclones were able to cut the deficit to five with 1:30 left in the half. The high-powered Cowgirls responded and extended the lead back to 10 as the two teams headed to the locker room. Carleton led all players with 17 points on 8-of-10 from the field in the first 20 minutes.
The Cyclones momentarily took the lead on a Carleton 3-pointer, but the Cowgirls quickly grabbed back the lead. However, Iowa State regained the lead for good with 3:49 left in the game. Carleton paced the Cyclones with a career-high 39 points, three short of the school record held by Tonya Burns.
Carleton went 16-of-22 for 73 percent from the field. The loss handed Oklahoma State its first home loss of the year.
The Cyclones are back in action on Saturday against Texas in Austin, Texas. The game is slated for 7 p.m.
