The Iowa State wrestling team will be traveling to the Sooner state for a weekend road trip to face Oklahoma and Oklahoma State in their first Big 12 road test of the season.

The Cyclones will face Oklahoma at 7 p.m. Friday and will then face Oklahoma State at 2 p.m. Sunday.

Iowa State will be without ranked 141-pounder Kanen Storr after Storr was granted a transfer request.

Storr is ranked No. 18 at 141-pounds according to Intermat.

In Storr’s place will either be one of two 133-pounders Markus Simmons and Ian Parker, who could slide up a weight class, or 141-pound Kristian Vazquez.

Vazquez is the only wrestler at 141-pounds left on the roster after Storr’s departure.

Whoever starts at 141-pounds for the Cyclones will be slotted to face Mike Longo from Oklahoma and No. 5 Dean Heil from Oklahoma State.

Longo has accumulated a 13-12 record this season and Heil is 18-2 with his only losses coming from a 2-1 decision against No. 1 Bryce Meredith and a 4-3 decision against No. 2 Kevin Jack. Whoever gets the draw against Heil will have their hands full with the former Big 12 Wrestler of the Year.

With Storr gone, there will be even more pressure for Jarrett Degen to produce bonus points. Degen has been on a tear this month earning two major decisions, two technical falls and one fall.

Degen attributes his recent success to a newfound confidence.

“I haven’t really believed in myself a lot,” Degen said. “Toward my senior year of high school I started to believe in myself [but] once I got to Virginia Tech it was like a punch in the gut … But recently I have really been believing in myself.”

Degen set the background on his phone to “You’ve got to have confidence.” He has also shown his commitment to being confident by writing ‘confidence’ everywhere and reading motivational tweets from Olympic gold medalist Jordan Burroughs.

That recent revelation has allowed Degen to flourish offensively this season. He said he is excited to wrestle two opponents he has already faced this season.

At the Lindenwood Open, Degen beat Oklahoma’s Davion Jeffries 11-6, but lost to Oklahoma State’s Boo Lewallen 13-7. Lewallen is ranked No. 15 at 149 pounds.

“I’m really looking forward to that match [against Lewallen], but both of them are big opportunities for me,” Degen said.

Degen isn’t the only person anticipating the rematch as coach Kevin Dresser is interested to see how Degen has improved this season.

“I’m curious to see what he learned in that match,” Dresser said. “He kind of got blown out early and in the third period he was really close … But you know I like our guy.”

One of the bright stars of the West Virginia dual for Iowa State was Samuel Colbray, who believes that the road trip to face both Oklahoma schools will be a defining moment for Iowa State’s season.

“It’s going to be a crucial point for our team and I think that we are ready for it,” Colbray said.

Colbray will be set to face the 197-pound No. 3 in the country, Oklahoma State’s Preston Weigel.

With the tough draw in mind, Colbray wants to stay on his feet and use his athleticism against Weigel.

“[I want to] get to my strengths, and that’s where I’m going to wrestle the best from, so that’s where I want to be at,” Colbray said.
