DES MOINES— Steve Prohm and the Iowa State men’s basketball team knew it had a chance to pick up a quality non-conference win against Northern Iowa on Saturday.

And the Cyclones did just that. Iowa State (8-2, 0-0 Big 12) knocked off UNI (8-3, 0-0 MVC) by a final score of 76-65.

Both teams got off to a slow start. Iowa State hit just four of its first 18 shots, falling behind 15-10 after the first 10 minutes of the game.

Northern Iowa wasn’t shooting much better. The two teams combined to start 19-for-54 from the floor (35 percent).

Freshman forward Cameron Lard led the Cyclones with eight points in the first half.

The Panthers took a 33-30 lead into the halftime break.

Donovan Jackson gave Iowa State a 36-35 lead less than four minutes into the second half, giving Iowa State its first lead since holding a 5-2 advantage at the 15:44 mark in the first half.

But no matter what either team did, the margin never got greater than six points in either direction for the first 32 minutes. Then, Lindell Wigginton took over.

Iowa State trailed 50-47 with just 10 minutes left, but thanks to seven straight points from Wigginton, Iowa State went on an 12-0 run to take a 59-50 lead.

Iowa State upped the lead to double-digits and closed out the game down the stretch.
