Iowa State grinds out win against Baylor

Despite David Montgomery leaving the game due to injury, Iowa State pulled out a 23-13 win against Baylor in Waco, Texas to move to 7-4 (5-3 Big 12).

After a quick three-and-out by Iowa State, Baylor quickly took the ball into the Iowa State red zone and capitalized on a fourth down conversion with a 13-yard touchdown pass from Charlie Brewer to Ishmail Wainright. The Bears’ drive went for six plays and 66 yards. Baylor 7, Iowa State 0

Iowa State answered back when Allen Lazard caught a 36-yard touchdown pass from Zeb Noland. On the catch, Lazard broke Todd Blythe’s record for most receiving yards from an Iowa State receiver. The six-play, 65 yard drive was also highlighted by Noland’s first career touchdown pass. Baylor 7, Iowa State 7

It didn’t take long for the Bears to strike back as they tacked on three points with a 27-yard field goal. Connor Martin’s kick ended a 19-play, 7:19 drive. Baylor 10, Iowa State 7

Garrett Owens and Iowa State knotted the game at 10-all after he drilled a 34-yard field goal. Baylor 10, Iowa State 10

Iowa State took its first lead of the game when Noland found Hakeem Butler for a 67-yard touchdown pass on the very first play of the drive. Iowa State 17, Baylor 10

Baylor came out of halftime and responded with another Martin field goal. This time a 47-yarder into the wind put the Bears within four points. Baylor’s drive went six plays for 45 yards. Iowa State 17, Baylor 13

Garrett Owens answered Martin’s field goal with a 22-yard field goal of his own. The kick capped a 17-play, 75-yard drive. Iowa State 20, Baylor 13

Owens tacked on another field goal after making a 45-yarder with 7:01 left in the game to extend the Cyclones’ lead. FINAL: Iowa State 23, Baylor 13
