Oklahoma State edges out Iowa State in offensive battle

Marchie Murdock painted his parents’ names on his face for senior day before  a game against Oklahoma State on Nov. 11 at Jack Trice Stadium. Iowa State and Oklahoma are tied up at halftime, 41-41.

No. 12 Oklahoma State defeated No. 24 Iowa State 49-42 Saturday afternoon after the Cowboys mounted a late comeback on Iowa State’s senior day. 

Iowa State opened up the scoring after Kyle Kempt found Allen Lazard on the Cyclones’ opening drive. The 14-yard touchdown pass capped off an 11-play, 73-yard drive. Iowa State 7, Oklahoma State 0

Just one drive later, David Montgomery turned a broken play into a 22-yard touchdown run that was highlighted by a Hakeem Butler block. The drive went 64 yards in 3:55. Iowa State 14, Oklahoma State 0

The Cowboys answered on the next drive and went 73 yards in eight plays. Mason Rudolph found Marcell Ateman in the back of the end zone for a 21-yard pitch and catch. Iowa State 14, Oklahoma State 7

Oklahoma State striked again after Colin Downing’s punt put them in prime field position at the Iowa State 32-yard line. The Cowboys quickly scored five plays later after Justice Hill scored on a 9-yard run. Iowa State 14, Oklahoma State 14

After another below average punt from Coling Downing, the Cowboys marched right back into the Iowa State red zone. Hill added his second touchdown of the on a 2-yard rush, capping off a 5-play, 60-yard drive. Iowa State 14, Oklahoma State 21

While struggling offensively, Iowa State pulled Kempt for an undisclosed injury and Zeb Noland took his place. Noland spearheaded a 7-play, 91-yard drive that ended in a Joel Lanning rushing touchdown with 22 seconds left in the first half. HALFTIME: Iowa State 21, Oklahoma State 21

The Cowboys took the opening drive in the second half all the way to the Iowa State 22-yard line before stalling. Matt Ammendola bailed out the Cowboys with a 35-yard field goal, finishing a 10-play, 58-yard drive. Iowa State 21, Oklahoma State 24

Iowa State answered right back as Montgomery took a direct snap for a 3-yard touchdown run. The run ended an 8-play, 71-yard drive that lasted 3:15. Iowa State 28, Oklahoma State 24

Oklahoma State exploded for a 2-play, 82-yard drive in 22 seconds that was highlighted by an 81-yard pass to Jalen McCleskey. Hill stuffed home a 1-yard rush to end the drive. Iowa State 28, Oklahoma State 31

The Cyclones answered as Lanning threw a 22-yard touchdown pass to Lazard, who snagged the pass with one hand. The drive went for 72 yards on 5 plays in 2:06. Iowa State 35, Oklahoma State 31

Oklahoma State answered right back and marched down the field before settling for a 41-yard field goal. Ammendola ended the Cowboys 10-play, 52-yard drive. Iowa State 35, Oklahoma State 34

Montgomery capped off a drive highlighted by two deep passes from Noland with a 4-yard run. The drive went 4 plays and 75 yards in 1:05. Iowa State 42, Oklahoma State 34

Again, Oklahoma State answered after Rudolph found Ateman for a 30-yard touchdown catch. The Cowboys went for two points and converted after Hill ran the ball in. The drive went 7 plays for 75 yards. Iowa State 42, Oklahoma State 42

Oklahoma State tacked onto their lead when Rudolph found Dillon Stoner for a 19-yard touchdown pass with 3:47 left in the game. The drive lasted 1:14 and went 3 plays for 51 yards. FINAL: Iowa State 42, Oklahoma State 49
