Bad day at the office for Cyclones against West Virginia

Instead of shocking a top 10 opponent and upsetting West Virginia on the road, the Iowa State women’s soccer team was run out of town.

The Mountaineers scored three goals in the second half and beat Iowa State 4-0 on Friday night. 

Iowa State made one change to its starting lineup, as freshman forward Courtney Powell started on the right wing in the Cyclones’ 4-4-1-1 formation. 

West Virginia took the lead quickly, as senior midfielder Alli Magaletta scored in the seventh minute. 

After going into halftime down 1-0, Iowa State gave up a goal to the Mountaineers in the 49th minute. Senior forward Michaela Abam scored to make it 2-0 West Virginia. 

In the 65th minute, senior forward Heather Kaleiohi added to the Cyclone misery by scoring to make it 3-0, and freshman forward Lauren Segalla scored West Virginia’s fourth goal in the 72nd minute. 

West Virginia had 25 shots to the Cyclones’ 6, and the Mountaineers had 13 corners compared to Iowa State’s one. 

It was Iowa State’s third loss of two goals or more this season, all coming against top 25 opposition. 

The Cyclones are now 2-11-2 on the season.
