Iowa State enrollment dips, still second highest on record

The Iowa State enrollment went down for the first time in a decade going from 36,660 to 36,321 for this fall semester.

The enrollment number for this semester is the second highest on record after the 1 percent drop, according to a press release. The drop was described as a “leveling off” university leaders have predicted over the past year.

The student body of fall 2017 represents all 99 of Iowa’s counties, all 50 states and 127 countries.

Iowans make up 55 percent of the overall student body and 60 percent of all undergraduates.

This semester, there are 4,115 international students, which is 16 students less than last year.

The College of Engineering is still the largest college with 9,669 students, followed by Liberal Arts and Sciences at 8,284 and Agriculture and Life Sciences with 5,333.

The decade of growth included eight years of record-breaking enrollment.

The freshman class is at 5,944 students, Iowans making up over half the freshman population, and has an average ACT score of 25. Around a quarter of the incoming class ranked in the top 10 percent of their class and had an average GPA of 3.61.

University of Iowa had a smaller freshman class this year with 5,029 incoming freshmen. The average ACT score of that class is 25.6.

University of Northern Iowa went up slightly in enrollment going from 11,905 to 11,907.
