During the first day of the Gopher Invitational, the Iowa State Women’s Tennis Team went 3-3 during doubles play. The Invitational consisted of only doubles play during the first day.

The Cyclones new No. 1 pairing of Maty Cancini and Ekaterina Repina lost their first match of the day with a 6-1 loss from Milica Novakovic/Andrea Amortegui of Marquette. The pair then followed up the defeat losing 6-3 against Caitlyn Merzbacher/Tina Kreinis from Minnesota.

The No. 2 pairing of Annabella Bonadonna and Margarita Timakova continued their great play from last season winning 6-3 and 6-1 while facing Theodora Kyriakopoulou/Marta-Anna Tynna from South Dakota State and Anastasia Bondarenko/Aria Chemodanova from South Dakota, respectively.

Erin Freeman and Regina Espindola, who occupied the No. 3 spot, won their first match 6-2 versus Nanette Nylund/Luana Stanciu from South Dakota. During the next match, Espindola teamed up with Karen Alvarez and ended up losing 7-5 to River Hart/Caroline Ryba of Minnesota.

Recovery will be key for the team in the coming days of the Invitational as the large amount of matches played this early in the season can lead to immense stress on the players bodies which can lead to injuries. If injuries do occur, a shuffle of players during doubles play will take place.
