The Big 12 Media Days took place Monday and Tuesday in Frisco, Texas, this week.

Cyclone football head coach Matt Campbell made the trip down to Texas along with offensive lineman Jake Campos, wide receiver Allen Lazard, linebacker and former quarterback Joel Lanning and cornerback Brian Peavy.

Campbell’s press conference was brief.

“I’m proud and I’m encouraged by what our football team has been able to do as we put an end to last football season,” Campbell said. “I think we learned some great lessons across the board. I think you saw our football team get better as last football season went on.”

Campbell answered questions from the media about Joel Lanning’s transition from quarterback to linebacker and Allen Lazard’s decision to return to college rather than enter the NFL draft, among others.

Lazard, who was named to the watch list for the Biletnikoff Award for the nation’s best receiver, received high praise from Campbell.

“I think when you see Allen Lazard, at least last year when you watched him at his best, he’s really special,” Campbell said. “He’s got the ability to make all the catches. He’s got the ability to be that guy on third down.

“For me it’s what he can do both with the ball in his hands going into his senior year but also the leadership he can provide our football program.”

Campbell also talked about the impact Bob Stoops, the recently retired former Oklahoma head coach, had on the league and on young coaches.

Iowa State football’s media day takes place August 3 in Ames.
