Cap City League update: The new players

Trevor Holbrook

Iowa State basketball was loaded with veteran presence last season; the top four scorers for the Cyclones were seniors.

Now that those four players are trying their hand at the professional level, a majority of Iowa State’s roster is new players.

The first opportunity for the Cyclone newcomers to play alongside their teammates is at Cap City League.

Cap City League consists of Drake, Iowa State, and local community colleges and high schools. Each team can have up to two Iowa State players.

The Cap City League season is about halfway complete. Here’s an update on the new players’ progress:

Marial Shayok:

Even though the Virginia transfer is required to sit out a season due to NCAA transfer rules, he’s still eligible to play in Cap City League.

Shayok has started every game and leds Cap City League in scoring. The 6-5 guard has averaged 46.4 points, 8.7 rebounds and 4.6 assists.

One of Shayok’s biggest adjustments on his new team is his role. Virginia, a defensive-minded team, sacrifices offense for good defense.

Cap City League grants an opportunity for Shayok to experiment with heavier offensive responsibilities.

“I get to be free offensively,” said Shayok. “At Iowa State I get to show my offensive side of my game, which is attacking and putting the ball in the hoop.”

Michael Jacobson:

Jacobson has made his presence felt at Cap City League. The Waukee native has recorded a double-double in every game.

Jacobson has built a reputation for consistency. The 6-9 post has averaged 20.0 points, 16.0 rebounds and 4.0 assists.

After transferring from Nebraska, Jacobson is also required to sit out a year. Jacobson still plans on helping out the team in any way he can.

“[My role is] getting as good of a look as I can on the scout team, just trying to prepare the other guys, and being really supportive of the guys,” said Jacobson.

Terrence Lewis:

Lewis has turned some heads at Cap City League. The lanky freshman has averaged 28.2 points and 8.6 rebounds, while maintaining a high shooting percentage.

Lewis, a four-star prospect according to 247Sports, has combined his perimeter shooting with his slashing ability to become an offensive weapon.

Lewis said, “[Iowa State fans can expect to see] my hustle, my aggressiveness, running up and down the court as fast as I can, shooting the ball well, getting people involved.”

When Lewis was asked if he thinks he can start, he immediately said, “Yes sir.”

Jack Hutchison:

Hutchison, a walk-on, has averaged 4.3 points, 2.4 rebounds and 1.0 assists.

Lindell Wigginton:

Wigginton has participated in the FIBA U19 World Cup, keeping him from playing in Cap City League.

Wigginton averaged 12.4 points, 7.0 rebounds, and 4.2 assists in the tournament. Wigginton’s team, Canada, won the Gold medal.

Wigginton attended Thursday’s games, but he sat out due to a concussion suffered in the FIBA U19 World Cup. It is unclear whether Wigginton will play in Cap City League this season.

Jeff Beverly:

Beverly has been nursing injuries, preventing him from participating in Cap City League. Since Beverly is a graduate transfer, he is eligible immediately.

Hans Brace:

Brace has yet to play. The 6-9 post is still recovering from an acl injury. Brace is also a graduate transfer and eligible immediately.
